To change the default user preferences held in the USERDATA.SYS file, run the DP4 System Setup utility from a command prompt (and not the DP4 menu), as follows:
DFSETUPOn the DP4 System Setup menu, select the User Preferences option and change the preferences as described in Changing a User's Preferences. Please note the following points:
DFSETUP will save the new USERDATA.SYS settings in its working directory, and therefore not necessarily in the directory where USERDATA.SYS was read from. If necessary, and when you are satisfied with your changes, copy the modified userdata.sys into the appropriate location. It is a good idea to keep a backup of both your original and your final userdata.sys files.
If you run DFSETUP from inside the DP4 menu, or at the same time as the DP4 menu is being run on the same computer, or from within or at the same time as QAB programs that use the DP4 menu facilities, then you may not be modifying the default preferences at all. An easy way to check whether you are modifying the default user settings is to go to the Colours and miscellanous cosmetics screen. If the default user settings are being modified you should have access to the Read Authority Level and Write Authority level entry fields. If the cursor skips past these fields when you navigate round the dialog then you are not modifying the correct settings. If you are sure the DP4 menu is not active, it may be that a menudata.sys file has been left on the machine from the previous time DP4 menu was in use. Quit DFSETUP, delete the rogue menudata.sys file and try running DFSETUP again. If the problem persists, then the USERDATA.SYS file has been corrupted. Run USERDATA, which should clean up the USERDATA.SYS file. If the problem still persists, then you need to create a completely fresh USERDATA file by running USERDATA -RESET.
