Copying the Database Structure

There are two utilities for copying the database structure:

• The Data Structure and Transfer Utility, RECASTDB

  This utility copies the database structure from the Data Transfer utility source database to the target database, completely overwriting the target's structure. The source and target databases must be on the same system. You can specify whether maps, help messages, Report Writer, Message Manager, QA Build and Importer programs are also copied. This utility is described in Transferring the Database Structure.

  Use the Data Structure and Data Transfer utility in these circumstances:

  • When you have used the database creation utility to create a new, empty database and want to copy the structure of an existing database onto it.

  • When you have modified the structure of a database and want to over write older versions of it with the new structure, while retaining their existing data.

• The Data Dictionary Extract and Post utility, COPYDB

  This utility copies the database structure in two stages:

  • First you extract the database structure of the source database to a file.

  • Then you post the database structure from the file to the target database.

  Use the Data Dictionary Extract and Post utility if you wish to merge two databases, or if you wish to transfer the structure to a target database on another system.
