Reorganising an Index

Use this option to rebuild specified logical indexes, after making a change that affects the index, such as changing an index link to 'update' with the index link editor.

We recommend that you enable roll-back logging when you run this option so that you can recover the database in the event of a system crash. However, if you do so, you should be aware that the reorganisation takes about twice the time it would normally take and that a large roll-back file may be created. During the reorganisation, the roll-back file can grow up to the size of the index file being rebuilt, depending on the amount of index restructuring.

  1. On the DP4 System menu, select the Run program option. Use this command to run the reorganisation with roll-back recovery enabled:
    REORGDB -ROLLBACK
    and select the database

  2. On the Database Reorganisation menu, select option 5 - Reorganise an index

  3. Enter the name of the table that uses the index, or press <Enter> and select a table from a popup list of tables on the database.

  4. Enter the name of the index or press <Enter> and select an index from a popup list.

  5. Enter the role name (if there is one).

DP4 now rebuild this index. A message is displayed to indicate how many old index entries have been removed and how many new index entries have been added

  6. When the reorganisation is complete, press <Enter> to return to the main reorganisation menu.
