Translating Maps into Different Languages

The 4.6xx MAPMAKE utility and the 4.5xx MAPEDIT both have a facility that allows maps to be exported to a text file that you can supply to a translator who will translate the maps into a foreign language. The translator does not require any knowledge of DP4. This is done as follows:

  1. Extract the maps' text in "Translator" format. See Extracting Maps for Translation
  2. Translate the file from the original language to the new language. See Translating Extracted Maps
  3. Post the translated file back into a new language code with MAPPOST.Posting Maps to a New Language

Please refer to Translator Format Limitations to learn about the limitations to what can be achieved using Translator Format, and for important advice on designing maps that you anticipate will be translated later on.

If you are maintaining an application which has maps in several different languages you may find the Multi-Language option in MAPMAKE useful.
