Using More Than One Language

DP4 provides a facility to enable your application to display text in the national language of the user. You set up the languages on your system in the language table using the MENUEDIT utility.

To make your application support more than one language, you add each language to the language table, and define the words for 'yes' and 'no', and the date format for the language. Text that is output by your application can be translated into a new language by editing the maps. When the user logs on, the user interface manager automatically selects the maps that are in the user's language.

Maps can be modified using the DP4 map editor, or they can be exported to a text file. Using the export option, you can translate the maps using your favourite editor or word processor, and post them back to the database.

For a multi-language application, you can copy the original set of maps, and translate the maps to each of the other supported languages. The positions of the fields usually remain the same for all languages.
