From the System Setup (DFSETUP) main menu, select Printer and device set up..., then select Device group (DG) description. This choice will allow you to define a Device Group
Enter the name you wish to give to your Device Group (in this case HP_LASER_LAND). You will be prompted to add your new Device Group to the system. After adding it the Device Group Editing Menu is opened.
(Optional) Select Copy and select one of the existing devices if you think that your device is similar to one of the devices already on the system database. This will copy all the information for the selected device group.
Select Device group description from the Device Group editing menu. This will place you in the screen below:

Enter the description of your Device Group. Consult the documentation that came with your printer and the online help messages to work out the correct answers for the other questions on this screen (though the defaults usually work well), until you are prompted for Device Family. Select Character Mode Device. This tells DP4 that your Device Group does not use an OSDI but sends characters to one of the device ports on the computer (such as LPT1 or COM2).
Leave the Hidden device checkbox clear if you want the user to be able to select this printer as a general purpose printer in DP4 utilities, and set it if the device should only be accessible to programs that select it explicitly.
Select the appropriate printer port for this print device. PRN is usually a good choice, but you may want to use one of the other ports, especially if more than one printer is connected. Although the list of available device names presented by DFSETUP is hard-coded, from Release 4.621(8) you can change the devices available at run-time by adding redirections in the DP4 Configuration File. See Device Names in the Guide to DP4 Configuration for details.
In order to access your printer from programs you need to create one or more PODs for it. Follow the instructions in POD Definition. To access the PODs follow the instructions in Accessing PODs from DP4 Applications
If you would like detailed control over how text appears on the printed page using coloured text to select print attributes then check the "Force 4.500" option. Please note that if you use this option you must set up all the maps you need for printing to this device using the 4.5xx version of MAPEDIT. Attempting to print to a printer with this option checked using maps that only exist in 4.6xx format will cause system error 131 (Map not found). Refer to Changing the Appearance of Printed Text for information on using coloured text.
