Editing Maps Outside QA Build

The instructions for editing maps outside QAB are different depending on whether you are using a 4.5xx or 4.6xx release of DP4.

4.6xx

You already have access to the full range of MAPEDIT facilities when you run it from QAB. However there are some additional useful facilites, that are currently built into another program called MAPMAKE, which is not accessible from the standard DP4 menu until release 4.621 (In 4.621 Select Screen and Form Utilities and then Utilities).

MAPMAKE has the following additional facilities:

• Deleting maps from more than one language at once
• Copying mapsets from more than one language at once
• Printing maps - either in MAPPOST format for transferring to other databases, translator format, for translation of maps into other languages without the use of MAPEDIT, or documentation format.
• Making change files (minimal MAPPOST files for distributing changes to a map to live systems or comparing two versions of a database)
• It contains an Integrity check that validates the map information. It is a good idea to run this from time to time, as it can help prevent maps being lost through information becoming corrupted. (Obviously this should not really be necessary, but software bugs, or "hacking" the map tables with BROWSER, have caused problems like this before now.)

You can select maps to edit using MAPMAKE, which then starts MAPEDIT much as it is started from the Program Editor. You may find you prefer to use MAPMAKE than MAPEDIT directly as it guides you through selecting maps to work on.

4.5xx

You can use the Map Editor outside QA Build. Either select the map editor from the Other Facilities section of the DP4 system menu, or run MAPEDIT.

When you run the Map Editor outside QA Build, it offers the following additional operations:

• Deleting maps
• Copying mapsets
• Printing maps (as for 4.6xx)
• Making change files (as for 4.6xx)
• Setting up maps in other languages
