Place Holders

The Program Editor provides limited support for the use of place holders. A place holder is an empty, non-executable procedure, distinguished by a letter P in the Program Flow Diagram. At compile time it may be substituted by any of a number of functional procedures, depending on requirements. These substitute procedures belong to variant libraries. The function of linking groups of procedures to place holders is called binding. Binding and detaching are controlled from the System Build menu.

The function of place holders is to permit the development of variations of a program in a controlled manner. One QA Build program may provide a variety of functions depending on the variant libraries selected. Or one source program may be used to produce compatible software for a diversity of till types.
