Installation

Before you install DP4, make sure that you have the latest installation notes for the operating system that you are using. The installation instructions will be different according to the release of DP4, and the operating system of the computer you are installing on. You can find notes for Installing on Windows based operating systems here, and notes for Installing on Unix/Linux or AIX here. The Installation notes also cover the steps necessary to preserve information when upgrading from an earlier DP4 release. Please check these notes carefully when installing a new DP4 release, as there are often changes from release to release.

Whether or not DP4 is already installed on your system, you will usually have the option to install DP4 using an Install program. This will guide you through all the steps of installing DP4.

On any platform DP4 will only run properly on your machine when the following files are present:

• A DP4 licence file, (DP4.SYS or DATAFIT.SYS), copied from your DP4 License Distribution disk is present. (You may be able to use a licence file copied from another DP4 installation machine, if this is not to hand, though this can cause problems).
• A Terminal Configuration file , (USERDATA.SYS), either copied from the installation media or created by running the USERDATA utility.
• The SYSTEM database files (SYSTEM.IND, SYSTEM.DAT, and, from release 4.622, SYSTEM.DCI and SYSTEM.PTR) are in the correct location(s).
• The database and terminal managers (SRVn and TRMn), and other core files such as the various DP4 DLLs used on Windows installations are present.
