Connecting to DP4 from Microsoft Query

You can use Microsoft Query (installed as part of Microsoft Office 97 or 2000) to query the data on a DP4 data source. To select a DP4 data source:

  1. In Microsoft query, bring up the Select Data Source dialog by selecting New Query or Table Definition from the File menu, or by selecting Execute SQL from the File menu and clicking Data Sources
  2. If the Available Data Sources list does not include the DP4 data source you want to use, click Other... Microsoft Query displays a dialog box listing the ODBC data sources installed on your computer
  3. Select the desired DP4 data source from the list and click OK. You are returned to the Select Data Source dialog where the DP4 data source you chose is highlighted. Click Use to use it

For details on how to use Microsoft Query, refer to its online help or user guide.

Microsoft Query is a useful diagnostic tool - if you are having problems with a particular SQL statement when using a DP4 ODBC connection it is well worth trying to use the same statement in the DP4 SQL Interpreter and also in Microsoft Query. This may well help isolate the cause of the problem - for example if the SQL Interpreter accepts the statement, but Microsoft Query does not then the problem is either within ODBC itself or in the DP4 ODBC driver, and not in the DP4 SQL Engine.
