The Guide to DP4 Networking and Resilience is intended for technical readers who wish to set up DP4 systems that will access DP4 databases over a network. It contains information both about setting up networking configurations, and aspects of the DP4 programming that are different in a resilient environment.
This manual focuses on our preferred Network platforms: TCP/IP protocol and Windows or Unix/Linux computers. Other protocols and platforms are covered, but fairly briefly. Contact us if you would like more detail to be included for other specific platforms.
Roughly speaking:
network manager, and server are synonymous. The former term applies to the specific software component that enables a machine to act as a 'server' to other machines for the DP4 databases on that machine.
Similarly network requester and client are synonymous. The former term applies to the specific software component that enables a machine to act as a 'client' accessing data from DP4 databases on other machines.
In the context of DP4 networking resilience is a term used to to describe the behaviour of the system in the event of a broken network connection. DP4 systems achieve resilience when DP4 databases reside on more than one machine. Using a resilience configuration allows a system to cope with network failures, and to spread work between a number of different servers.
